Colegio Apostólico de San Fernando was founded in Mexico City in 1734 and served as a training place for Franciscan missionaries sent to work among the indigenous people of New Spain, including in California and Baja California. The present ledger or account book, compiled by Joaquín Cortina Gonzalez, and covering the period from Feb. 14, 1818 through Jan. 1, 1843, records all manner of day-to-day expenses for the Colegio including food items such as biscuits, butter, honey, bread, Guyaquil chocolate, cane sugar, crates of cod, a barrel of Spanish sherry. Other entries record transactions with tradespeople including barbers, laundresses, cobblers, brick layers, a sombrero-maker, olive pressers, cigarette-rollers, and more. The names of people commissioning masses are recorded and some of the masses were said for the Franciscan missionaries in California. Shipments of crosses, prayer books and rosaries to the frontier missions are also noted.
